Sans Serif records with regret the demise of Raymond Leblanc, the Belgian publisher behind the comic-book hero Tintin. He was 92. The iconic boy-reporter, created by Herge, had first appeared as a character in 1929, but it wasn’t until the association with Leblanc began that he became a global hero. Tintin first appeared in a fortnightly magazine in 1946, and later became a stand-alone star of the Lombard publishing house.

Tintin/Snowy’s adventures with Captain Haddock and Professor Calculus gave my sister and me hundreds of hours of laughter and discussion throughout our childhood.
Thanks to Tintin, the comic icon for readers of all ages. RIP, Raymond Leblanc.
Leblanc was also the producer of some 1960s Astérix movies.
Interestingly, the name Leblanc seems to have an affinity for success:
1. Georges Leblanc and son Leon were famous early-20th-cent. makers of musical instruments (mostly wooden wind instruments such as clarinet); 2. Matt Leblanc is the famous actor who plays Joey Tribbiani in “Friends”; 3. Nicholas Leblanc, the 18th century chemist, was the earliest maker of washing soda; 4. Adrian Leblanc is the author of the acclaimed Bronx sobstory “Random Family”; 5. And of course Leblanc is also Switzerland’s least known but perhaps greatest maker of racing cars!
