KALAM: Why is the Indian media so negative?

By A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM

Why is the media in India so negative?

Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?

We are the first in milk production.

We are number one in Remote sensing satellites.

We are the second largest producer of wheat.

We are the second largest producer of rice.

Look at Dr. H Sudarshan, he has transferred a tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.

I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news.

In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime. Why are we so NEGATIVE…?

yes. we should not be negative. should pretend to be positive at least

  2. u know hu

but kalam boss, aren’t u being too negative on media. u see, let me share a secret with u, it is not the media that is negative, it is the people.

just look at them. they are, as u suggest, so easily carried away by the media to become cynical. but the very same people give a damn to the very same media which also tells them not to vote for the corrupt, not to corrupt others, not to become corrupt, not to shirk responsbility, not to find excuses for shirking work, not to look for scapegoats for your blunders, not to treat public property as nobody’s property and of course not to mention of not to use roadside u know for what.

u see, kalam boss. there are so many ‘nots’ that media uses daily, it has little or no impact. if two nots make one positive, so many nots should have led to some positives. anyway u r good at science and maths and let me not, u see, here too there is a not, trouble myself (ah shirking, is it?).

as i said, did i or didn’t i, people are smart, u see. if u r cynical, u need not do anything for anybody, except yourself.

kalam boss. that is the secret of media’s success. people love it because they need to have someone to blame, u see, apart from each other, of course.

but kalam boss. don’t be disheartened and dont stop taking potshots at media. we will take it sportingly. u see, we are too negative even to be cynical about your digs at us.

Each time this chap opens his mouth on the media, you must wonder if he is a missile technologist or a Bollywood film maker. Look, he says, don’t record reality. Instead, he says, create a world of make-believe. That’s what Steven Spielberg does. But why blame the Rashtrapati; blaming the media is a national pastime. We are everybody’s favourite whipping boy.

Who in his right mind doesn’t celebrate achievement? Today’s VT front page, which salutes the Bradmen from Hyderabad, is a good example. But the Kalams (and Narayan Murthys of the world) seem to think that we should make every effort to ignore the bad news. The death on our roads, the suicides of our farmers, the looting of our coffers by our politicians, they want us to ignore all that.

Instead, they seem to say, we should keep harping about the GDP growth, the odd NGO, about the India story. That is advertising, not journalism. The media has a public service mission. The media is not Sr Sri Ravi Shankar, spreading positive news. To the likes of Kalam, it’s time we in the media have the courage to stand up and say, shut up.

You do your job, we will do ours.

  4. Jeethu

But do people read positive stories

    for Aatmasakshi :

wht do u know about Mr. Kalam.
just because u may be a media person, u dont have any right to say any such baseless things. u people just strive to get a NEWS!!!!
n then it doesn’t really matter you, how ruthlessly you behave to just GET IT!!
people like you are saddist, a frustated lot or the one who are over obsessed by their job and try to prove that its the only best job. he doesnt need to prove anything, he and his name is enough to make us proud ,unlike you n your name.

    1. you are right…. APJ Abdul Kalam.. is the best

  6. tarun

yes i am agree with mr. kalam.
indian media is negetive to much extent.
they are always try to highlight -ve news and reports.

  7. sri

See the language used by “aatmakshi ” calling the president a chap. I would listen to a learned man like Dr.Abdula Kalam who speaks a relatively broken english to oxford graduates and people like Aatmakshi because he knows what he speaks , you ae people who write anything for money.

Thankfully there are of few journalist like TJS George , shekhar gupta whom i respect in this website

  8. RAJ SHAH

President Kalam has a very good point. Why we are so negative? I am in the media business here in USA and we publish only positive stories about Indians and India. We get lot of calls and emails mentioning that why we are drawing only rosy picture. And of course our answer is that there are enough media drawing negative picture and we do not want to be one of them. One sad thing is that there are lot of people in the world who like to read about murder and violence. And of course media is giving them what they want realizing the social responsibility

    Salute to Aatmasakshi.
He’s right, you gain nothing by informing the people with the prosperity of our nation;which I guess doesn;t require no twilight zone to be seen.Whereas those obsene incidents ,as I saw today on Times of India(10-8-2010) a 2 year old being raped;now ,that requires attention and a lot of thought…….

  10. vikas

Dr. kalam is correct; we all know low of attraction: more you think/talk about negativity more negativity will come.
Lets Talk/think/Share positive thoughts about our lovely India.
Media is just showing only negative points about CWG-India; non has talk about single positive point about CWG-India. There are lot of positive points about CWG-India.
Lets show some positivity towards our lovely India.

  11. deepak

i completely agree with vikas as law of attraction works,if u think/talk/listen negative, what do u hav will be negativity.which cannot do any good for any person.
as media has responsibility to bring change to the society, they should publish provoking thoughts on the fist page(as many people read 1st page only).
as someone mentioned we r getting cynical, people like to read abt violence etc why people r like this? one reason can be media is giving matter for their trifling banter.

  12. moreshwar murari

Yes i agree with Dr.Kalam and Vikas. i got lot of experience of law of attraction . in my village one person who is reading regularly negative news from new paper. he is completely negative for life. he is clever than other friends but he is reading negative thoughts and negative news. he is unemployed.sometime he was undegone frustation . i was read this news 2 year ago. On abdulkalam.com then i have decided to search good news in news paper. mostly there are political, suicide, rape and good news in inner page. i am observing when television programm start to showing extra-marital relationship in television programme. then in news in news paper increase murders through extra-marital relationship. i think this is law of attraction by Indian people. media is teaching this type of life. i think when indian media change then indian people life is happy. i like concept of ashutosh gowarikar who is showing about patriotism, he is not showing munni badnam, sheela ki jawani. he is showing who was devoted life for country. when i was seen swades.this is film is given very good messege to india. thousands of +ve stories in india.soooooooooooo please stop -ve messege to india.

  13. An article by Dr.APJ ABDUL KALAM , with which i agree completely.

It is so hard to watch a complete news bulletin nowadays and stay positive.

I mean ‘is nothing positive going on in the country’?I fail to understand that what is the use of being ‘up to date’ with the current affairs when most of them include news of scams with astronomical figures (where it is hard to count the number of zeroes in the scam figures!!) only to find out that the news gets slowly faded away in the dark to be replaced by some bigger scam or news of a bomb blast, riots, killings.

But the thing that worry me the most is that even the people to which the news is catered are not complaining and instead giving these news channels the very essential TRPs on which they are flourishing.

Sad to say…..such things give an indication that our media and also the target audience consists of sadists and frustrated people who thrive on others pain.

  14. bhargavi

really a great suggesstion for media sir Bharat Ratna Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam. my dear responsers i would not blame you anyway but he is one of our hounarable president and a great legender so please call him in a respective manner.

  15. Deepak

Media also has its coffers filled from the mota maal and hence has officially become part of 7RCR. Hence they are negative about everything good in the world, except the first family and party.

When there was a demand for Kalam to be made President again, media showed its true colours by questioning his motive – this of course done to please the S Company.

Can’t expect anything other than negativity from paid media.

  16. Excellent words Sir !!

  17. parvathy

i really proud to be an indian.iam really agree with kalam sir statement.our media is so negative.even a silly news media try make it a great issue.and they try to give more preferance to the negative issue’s to increase the rating.

  18. What personages like Dr Kalam say cannot be wrong. More than the negatives that they report – people in the media need to check the attitude they adopt to go about their so called reporting – they are one sided(this is obvious), they say 24/7 but that is not really true sometimes what is broadcast late night is hardly any different than what was broadcast at 6pm…and the way they keep repeating the same footage especially when they show unsightly stuff – adds to the negativity by sheer exaggeration… Dr Kalam is stating a plain truth… instead of being so touched to the quick the media folk who are ranting out here should introspect(sorry – this is a difficult thing for them to do)… at least be silent and pretend to accept a home truth.

  19. Anas salam

I really agree with this statement of great Dr APJ Abdulkalam sir.Even the silly news our media gets try to big.Honestly it’s very shame to say like this words.our media should always try to obsessed only bad news and also like disasters. But not possible to change medias attitude ;because they always going to money and also keep their position to high.If anything happens in any place like any small issues or silly problems ,medias were go to there place an also discuss about it;at the same time whenever happens the big disasters anywhere; the media should try to go there and also publishing the news infront of news papers at the same time media should try to forget or avoid the little issues.”Even till it will change soon………..!

  20. 100% right I supported you

I motivate to our eassy. .
